Grail #1 Vintage Formosa Bob

Lot Title: Handcrafted Tiki Bob Mug — Artist “DG,” Dated May 13, 1962

Offered here is a singular example of mid-century ceramic artistry: a handmade Tiki Bob mug attributed to the artist identified only by the initials “DG.” This exceptional piece is dated on the base, 5/13/1962, and features a rare hand-applied yellow glaze with a crackle finish, indicative of both the era and the artist’s individual technique.

Of particular note is the inscription “F” (For the Formosa 7156 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046) along the side of the figure, further enhancing its intrigue and possible historical relevance. Based on form and detail, this mug is believed to have been cast from an early Tiki Bob mold, most likely replicated independently by the artist.

To our knowledge, this is the only known example of its kind in existence. Its condition remains outstanding, especially considering its age, making it a significant and highly desirable artifact for collectors of Tiki ephemera and mid-century ceramics.
